Which GPU Should I Upgrade To: RX 6700 XT or RTX 3070?

Hey everyone! I'm looking to upgrade my graphics card and I'm a bit torn between the RX 6700 XT with 12GB of VRAM and the RTX 3070 with 8GB. My budget is around $300 if I check the used market. Just a heads-up, my PC is quite old; I'm currently running an i3-9100F which I know will bottleneck the GPU, but I'm planning to upgrade to a Ryzen 5 5600 later. The reason I want to buy the GPU first is that upgrading the CPU also means I'll need a new motherboard.

To be honest, I'm also not sure if now is the right time to do this upgrade at all. Do you all think it's worth going for a GPU now, or should I wait for a few months or even a year for better deals and newer options? Would really appreciate any advice, and feel free to ask for more details about my setup! Thanks!

If it were me, I'd lean towards the RX 6700 XT for the extra VRAM, especially if you play graphically demanding games or like VR. However, if you're more into competitive games and prioritizing frame rates over visuals, the RTX 3070 could be better for you. Also, you might want to check out the 7700 XT or 4060 Ti if they fit your budget too!

Great point about the compatibility with Linux. Considering Arch, I'd definitely recommend going AMD for better support and longevity. I’d avoid GPUs with less than 12GB of VRAM if you want to future-proof your setup. The 3070 has had issues due to its lower VRAM, so keep that in mind.

You might be able to snag a 3080 for around $300 on the used market! I’ve seen some popping up, depending on your area. Just keep your eyes out for good deals and be cautious with the condition!

Honestly, I'd suggest you think about upgrading your CPU first. Your old i3 is going to be a huge bottleneck for any new GPU you get. Once you have a better CPU, you’ll see a much greater overall performance boost. Plus, that way, your future GPU upgrade will be smoother! Remember, you can always grab a good GPU later on.
