Which Linux Distribution Should I Try for Customization and Stability?

Hey everyone! I've been trying to switch to Linux for about a month now, and it's been quite a journey. I started with Linux Mint, but I couldn't connect to my NAS, and I want more customization options. I then tried Geruda and faced issues after installing; I couldn't even log in. CachyOS KDE was decent for a while—I got my NAS set up, got a VM going, and even managed to play some Steam games—but then it crashed and deleted system files out of nowhere, which was really frustrating. EndeavorOS KDE didn't connect to my NAS either, and Arch Linux just made things worse with crashes. I'm looking for a distro that allows good customization, works well with Steam games, and has an easy way to connect a NAS and set up a VM. Any recommendations for something stable? Right now, my main issues seem to be with Samba for my NAS and random crashes. Thanks for any help!

It sounds like you're having a rough time, but don't lose hope! If multiple distros are failing, it might be a hardware issue rather than just the OS. Have you checked your RAM or SSD? For your requirements, I'd suggest either Fedora or Debian. Fedora is great for modern features and quick updates, and it's supported well by Red Hat, so it has good stability. Debian has a larger community, which means lots of help and resources. You might want to give one of those a shot!

Thanks for the suggestions! I've heard Fedora mentioned a lot—definitely going to look into it more.

If you're after customization, just keep in mind that most distros are similar behind the scenes. If you found Mint hard to customize, you might want to look into KDE Plasma for a more configurable desktop environment. Just a heads up, if your systems keep 'deleting themselves', it really sounds like a hardware failure rather than just the distro. Maybe try a different SSD?

I think you might be right; my NVMe is brand new but acting weird. I'm going to check it and possibly swap it if I can.

I feel your pain! Sounds like you need something solid. If you're looking for easy NAS setup and gaming, have you considered Kubuntu? It's pretty stable and has a user-friendly package management system. Just make sure to install the right Samba packages to connect to your NAS easily. Your crashes could be from hardware issues—check your memory with memtest86, and if you can, swap out your power supply just to rule that out.

Kubuntu could be the one! You've given me some ideas to troubleshoot my hardware issues too.
