Which Linux Distro Should I Choose: Fedora or Ubuntu?

Hey everyone! I've just got a new PC with a Ryzen 7 9700X and a Radeon RX 9060XT, and I'm looking for some help in choosing the right Linux distribution. I'm planning to run some AI models locally and do a bit of app development. I want a distro that's reliable, efficient, and compatible, so I can avoid those frustrating hiccups. As a lifelong Windows user, I'm still pretty new to Linux, but I have a basic understanding. I've read that Ubuntu has better support for AMD's ROCm, but I've also heard that Fedora has strong community support and a more modern kernel. I really like the sound of Fedora, but I don't want to start with it only to run into issues down the line and end up switching to Ubuntu later. I want to make an informed choice now and stick with it. Any real-world insights would be super helpful! Thanks in advance!

Either choice should serve you well, but I recommend rethinking your desktop environment. If you’re considering KDE, try Kubuntu LTS or Fedora KDE. You can test these out on websites where you can explore the environments before committing!

I'm actually using Pop!_OS for app development and find it pretty user-friendly and stable. You might want to give it a shot as it's quite well-suited for developers.

As a Fedora maintainer, I can say that Fedora does focus on AI applications and has a dedicated AI/ML special interest group that works on ROCm packages. Many applications you might be interested in will be available as containers, so you should have access to them easily. But if you find there's something missing, I'd be glad to help you package it for Fedora. It's all about making the developer experience better! If you give Fedora a shot and hit any snags, feel free to reach out for assistance.

Almost all Linux distros share the same core— the kernel. That said, distributions differ based on the software and user experience. To get a better feel for how different distros compare, I suggest checking out some video overviews. Here's a great one: https://youtu.be/iCE6cbcQYZo. It's been eye-opening for many newcomers!

If you're struggling to decide, definitely check out the distro selection page on forums dedicated to Linux newcomers. Also, consider using a virtual machine to experiment without committing right away. And remember, it's wise to regularly back up your data! Don’t hesitate to get your hands dirty and try things out.

If you're looking for stability, Ubuntu might be your best bet. Fedora is great but it's a bit more cutting edge, which can lead to occasional instability. With Ubuntu, you're likely to face fewer little bugs and issues, making for a smoother experience. Just be cautious with updates — some users prefer to wait post-update to ensure stability.
