I'm looking for advice on choosing a Linux distribution for my sandy bridge system with an AMD GPU that I want to use for light gaming. After Windows 10, I figured it was time to try Linux. Here are my criteria:
1. I prefer a distro that comes with KDE Plasma out of the box since I like the aesthetics. I've heard that installing it separately, like on Linux Mint, can sometimes be problematic.
2. I want to avoid distros that's heavily gaming-focused, such as Bazzite or SteamOS.
3. It should offer a typical desktop environment suitable for school productivity, avoiding anything that looks too much like a gaming setup.
I've considered Linux Mint with XFCE and adding KDE, as well as Fedora and CachyOS, but I've been warned they may not perform well on older hardware. What would you recommend?

MX Linux is worth a look too! It’s user-friendly and performs well on older systems. Just keep in mind that while KDE is possible, it isn't the default, so check if that matters to you.
You might also consider Fedore KDE or a Fedora-based distro. Despite concerns about older hardware, if your system isn't from before 2010, you should be just fine. Debian is another solid choice, especially if you want something more stable.
Kubuntu seems like a great fit for your needs. It has KDE Plasma by default and offers a good balance between performance and usability, especially for an older system. Definitely give it a try!
I get your concerns about performance! While Fedora and CachyOS have modern features, they can be a bit demanding on older hardware. Stick with Kubuntu or Debian for a smoother experience.
