Why am I hitting a 10 vCPU limit in Azure?

Hey everyone! I'm in the process of migrating some really old on-prem applications and web hosting to the cloud due to a tight deadline. Our whole business relies on these apps, so getting them up and running is critical. I'm fairly new to the company and the industry, and while I have some experience with Azure and AWS, I'm still figuring things out.

I set up a prototype environment in Azure Japan East without any issues. However, when I tried to add another server, I hit a regional vCPU limit of 10, but I actually need around 20 to accommodate both the application servers and the database server in the same location. I put in an auto request but got denied, and the support ticket I submitted was also denied. I even tried regions like Japan West, Korea South, and Canada Central, but it was the same result each time. We need to stay GDPR compliant, so I've skipped the US regions for now.

Is Azure really that limited in capacity, or am I doing something wrong? I would have expected to see discussions about quota issues if it were a widespread problem. My next step might be to explore AWS, but I'd need to learn a lot about it, and time isn't on my side. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Check out this documentation on increasing quotas in Azure: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/quotas/quickstart-increase-quota-portal. This might give you a clearer path forward.

Not sure why GDPR would be an issue with US regions. However, I understand your concerns about data compliance. Your research seems reasonable since different countries have varying rules around data privacy.

Have you tried opening another support ticket to request a higher quota? That might be the way to go if you haven’t done it yet.

I did try that! Unfortunately, every ticket I opened got a response saying my request was denied due to high demand.

I've made similar requests before in Japan East and they’ve all gone through without any issues. A 10 vCPU limit does seem low. Could it be you’re trying to request an older class of servers or something more restricted? Just a hunch.

Nope, this is for a general request and not tied to a specific server family. Just trying to up the total regional count from 10 to 20.

It sounds like you might be facing anti-fraud limits, especially since your Azure account is new. Typically, Microsoft requires more spending history to approve increases. If you go through a partner account instead of your current setup, you might have better luck. Just a thought!

We’ve had M365 and Entra for a while, but using Azure servers is new for us. Thanks for clarifying that! I'll definitely look into it.
