Why am I seeing minimal FPS improvement after upgrading to an RTX 5060?

I recently upgraded my graphics card from a GTX 1080 to an RTX 5060, primarily for playing CS2 and Fortnite. After a couple of days of setting everything up properly, I've only noticed about a 10% increase in frame rates, which seems off. I'm gaming at 1440p with 16GB of Corsair Dominator RAM and an R5 3600 CPU, and my system is well-cooled after a thorough cleaning. My cousin, who has a 5060 paired with a 5600x CPU, is getting around 400-500 FPS in Fortnite's DX12 performance mode, while I'm stuck between 230-280 FPS. This isn't a huge jump from the FPS I was getting with the GTX 1080 (210-260 FPS). Can anyone help me understand what's going wrong with my setup?

You mentioned your RAM quality. Sometimes latency and speed can significantly affect performance as well, especially in CPU-heavy games. Make sure both your RAM and your friend's RAM speeds are optimized.

We have the same RAM speeds, but I believe mine is better quality with lower latency.

10% improvement sounds about right for this upgrade. Remember that the Ryzen 3rd gen CPUs are at par with some older Intel models in core performance, which is something to consider if you're thinking about upgrading your CPU for better results.

True! Upgrading to something like a Ryzen 7 5800X3D could give you a noticeable boost.

If you're not seeing improvements in those games, why not try running more graphically demanding titles? Modern games can leverage newer GPU capabilities better than esports titles like CS or Fortnite.

It sounds like your CPU is holding you back. Games like CS2 and Fortnite are quite CPU-intensive. Even the Ryzen 5 5600X can outperform your R5 3600 significantly in these titles. So, you might see lower FPS just due to that bottleneck, even with the same GPU settings. It's not uncommon for competitive games to rely more on the CPU than the GPU.

That makes sense! But should the difference between the 5600X and the 3600 really impact things this much? Wouldn't the 5060 still show a decent improvement over the 1080?

Honestly, the RTX 5060 isn't that much of an upgrade over the 1080 in real-world performance; it's more like a refined version. Even with a stronger CPU, you might only see an overall improvement of about 25% in FPS. So, a 10% boost isn’t too shocking considering all factors at play.
