Why Are My SD Cards Stuck in Read-Only Mode?

Hey everyone! I'm having a frustrating issue with my SD cards—they're all stuck in read-only mode when I connect them to my computer. I can delete files no problem when they're in my camera, but on my PC, it's a different story. I've checked the lock switch on the cards, and it's set to unlocked. I even tried switching it back and forth, but that didn't help. When I go to format the SD card, my Windows PC says it's write protected. I checked on a Chromebook too, and it showed a similar read-only message.

I attempted to use diskpart to clear the readonly attribute, but it seemed to do nothing, even after restarting my computer. I've been poking around in disk management, trying to delete and reinstall the discs, but nothing works! I remember being able to delete files from these cards a while ago—definitely before last year—so I'm not sure what caused this to happen. Any troubleshooting advice would be much appreciated!

I've seen this happen with older SD card readers. I had a USB reader that caused the same issue. Tried a modern one, and the problem went away completely.

It might also be that the SD cards are formatted to a file system that your computer can't write to without additional software. I had a hard drive that was formatted for Linux, and I needed specific applications to manage the files on a different computer.

That's a good point! If it's formatted for Linux, what type of application would I need to get?

Just a heads up, the write protect feature on SD cards is a mechanical thing. It tells your computer that the card is read-only. There might be a stuck switch in your card reader causing this issue. You can consider changing some internal settings, or use third-party software to bypass the read-only restriction.

It sounds like your SD cards may have gone into read-only mode to protect your data, especially if they're failing. This is often a way for many cards to prevent data loss before they completely stop working. It's a good idea to back up whatever data you have left before replacing the cards.

I've experienced that too! The SD card will go read-only but won't show any error, which sucks because I lost some files that way. It's wild how unreliable SD cards can be, even though they're solid state.

You should try using the official SD formatter tool found here: [SD Formatter Tool](https://www.sdcard.org/downloads/formatter/). Sometimes a read-only status could indicate that the card has a corrupt file system, so this tool might fix it.

Awesome, I'll give that a shot! Thanks for the recommendation!

Make sure you're checking the slider on the SD card itself too! Some larger SD cards have a slider that goes from read-only to read/write. It might just be a simple fix.
