I recently installed GNOME on my Linux Mint system, but I'm finding that the customization options in the settings are quite limited. I can only switch between dark and light mode and change the wallpaper, but there's nothing else I can adjust. I'm wondering if I might have installed a basic version of GNOME instead of the full one. Any advice on how to access more customization options?

That's just the way GNOME operates. For more customization, you’ll want to look into Extensions. Try installing the "Extension Manager" and also "Gnome Tweaks" from the software center. Those tools let you add a lot more features and customizations by enabling various extensions.
Unfortunately, GNOME is pretty limited in terms of visual customization right out of the box. Aside from changing the wallpaper and switching between light and dark modes, the main addition in version 47 is the accent color. So, yes, it does feel minimalistic compared to other environments.
I just ran into another issue where all my GNOME changes disappeared after a restart. I had changed the wallpaper and some extensions, and now they're all gone. I'm considering switching to a GNOME-based distro like Fedora instead.
So if I switch to a Fedora-based distro, will it let me customize GNOME more?
