Hey everyone! I'm helping my grandma upgrade her internet since it's super slow right now. She's currently with AT&T and has their basic plan (Internet Basic 6). We called AT&T to see if we could get a speed upgrade, but they told us it's not possible. This really confuses me because it seems odd that we can't upgrade, especially since she hasn't changed anything in years. The house is older, so I'm not sure if that affects things. Can anyone shed some light on why we might be stuck with this slow speed?

The internet speeds you can get are tied to your provider's infrastructure and also your house's lines. If you're on old copper lines, your speed could be limited. Distance from the nearest connection point also matters. It's a good idea to ask your provider for detailed info on what's possible at your location!
The speed options you get really depend on the equipment AT&T has installed in your area. Some places have access to super-fast fiber internet, while others might only have old phone lines or cable. It's best to check what other providers might offer too, as sometimes they have exclusive agreements in certain areas. If your neighborhood is less populated, they may not see it worthwhile to invest in upgrading the infrastructure, which can be a big and messy job. Generally, though, more areas are getting fiber over time.
