I just started a remote job with a BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) policy. On Monday, an IT technician remotely accessed my personal computer to run some scripts to make it compliant for remote work. Afterwards, I noticed that my admin account was changed to a regular user account, and a new admin account was created that I don't have access to. When I asked IT about getting my admin access back, they told me it's against company policy for employees to have admin rights on their personal devices for security reasons. They said my original account would only be restored once I leave the company. I wasn't informed about this policy beforehand, and now I can't install any new software. Is there any way to regain my admin access, or should I be concerned about this process?

This practice is highly unethical, especially if they're making you work on your personal computer without permission. If they're unwilling to provide a proper setup or resolve the issue, it might be best to start seeking other job opportunities.
Definitely keep your options open, you deserve to work for a company that respects your property.
You mentioned that they're controlling your personal device—this sounds a bit like a scam. Legitimate companies will provide equipment for work purposes, especially when it involves sensitive information. Make sure you have backed up any important files, and wipe your device to regain control before it's too late.
I appreciate your concern! I have backed up my data, but what should I do if they try to remote wipe my machine?
Keep watching for any odd behavior from your IT. If it seems sketchy, definitely consider looking for a new job.
This is definitely not standard practice for BYOD policies; they shouldn't have control over your personal device like that. I recommend contacting HR instead of IT for this issue—HR might step in and resolve the situation or provide you with a company device.
Great idea! I hadn't thought of going to HR—thanks for the suggestion.
HR should definitely handle this; it’s a huge liability for the company!
As an IT Admin, I find this situation really concerning. Generally, we wouldn't take away admin rights on someone's personal device. It's not just about security; it's also about respecting personal property. I suggest you ask your company for a work computer, or consider leaving if they’re unwilling. No good company would do this to an employee.
Thanks for the insight! This is definitely unusual, and I’ve never faced something like this before in any of my previous jobs, especially in healthcare. I did ask about getting a work laptop, and they said it would take about a month, so they're making me use my own device in the meantime.
I totally agree; nobody should pressure you to give up control over your own device like this. It's a huge red flag!
I think you should consider completely wiping your machine and reinstalling the OS. Let them know it was their requirement that led to this, and if they want you to work with their systems, they need to provide you with the necessary equipment.
That's definitely an option I'm considering! I just need to be careful to back everything up first.
Yeah, if they want control, they need to provide the equipment to do so!
That’s what I’ve been leaning toward. It just feels all wrong at this point.
