Why do I need a certificate of ownership for my smartphone repair?

I've been dealing with a situation where Squaretrade/Allstate is refusing to repair my phone despite having the sales receipt. They insist that I need a "certificate of ownership." I'm confused about what this certificate is specifically for smartphones and if it's also required for other electronics like TVs. Also, I've received emails from Apple regarding Checkmend and other companies, which seems to complicate things. What's going on with all this?

It sounds like you're in a bit of a pickle! Typically, a certificate of ownership is just proof that you bought the device. That usually means your original purchase receipt should suffice. The mention of those companies like Checkmend might be part of a verification process for stolen devices or such. If they’re asking for it, I'd check if they’re legit. It could also mean they're not certified to work on Apple devices, which seems pretty sketchy.

Yeah, I agree! I think if they can't use the serial number for repairs, they're probably not a trusted Apple service. Maybe reach out to Apple support directly about it.
