Why Do My Monitors Keep Turning Off Randomly While Fans Go Wild?

I'm having a really unusual problem with my desktop PC, which is less than two years old. It randomly happens about once a week where both monitors shut off and all the computer fans kick into high gear like it's trying to take off. Even though I can't see anything on the screens, I can still hear sounds indicating that my computer is running in the background. I've tried ignoring it to see if it would fix itself, but it just keeps running like that—I've waited for as long as 15 minutes, and nothing changes, so I usually end up just hard resetting the system.

Interestingly, this issue seems to occur more frequently when I'm not using resource-intensive applications, often while just browsing the web or when I'm not doing much at all. Here's what I've already done to troubleshoot:

1. Updated GPU drivers multiple times, even rolling back to previous versions, but the issue persists.
2. Ran stress tests and benchmarks with no problems detected.
3. Monitored temps and everything's within safe limits.
4. Re-seated all major components like the GPU and RAM, and re-applied thermal paste.
5. Had it checked out under warranty, but the techs couldn't replicate the issue.
6. Ensured my power supply is adequate, using a 1000W PSU which shows no high power usage.

My specs include an R7 7800x3D, RTX 4090, 64 GB DDR5 RAM, and an ASUS TUF GAMING B650-PLUS motherboard. Anyone have suggestions on what could be causing this?

Since you've updated the drivers, have you tried doing a clean install? Fully removing them and reinstalling could help. If the issue happens again, try pressing the Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B keys to reset the graphics drivers. It might just work!

I did a full clean reinstall after the fourth occurrence. I'll remember the key combo for next time though!

Have you checked if your BIOS is up to date? Sometimes, BIOS updates can resolve erratic hardware issues. Just a thought!

I haven't looked into the BIOS yet. I've never updated it before, but I'll definitely check that out!

Here are a few ideas: put your Windows in low-performance mode, install MSI Afterburner to limit graphics power, or use CPU Throttle to scale back processor power. It’s possible that a temperature sensor is pushing your fans hard even when the display goes dark; it might be related to the graphics card!

I know it seems a bit out there, but think back—any hardware changes made recently? Check the age and model of your PSU; older models can trip under load. Try using more PCIe cables from the PSU to the GPU if you can. It might help distribute the load better and prevent that shut-off from occurring!

Everything was bought as a set recently, including the Corsair RM1000x PSU. I haven't messed with tuning or OC settings, and it seems strange that it would trip protections at low usage. I’ll definitely try different cables though—I'm open to suggestions!
