I've been trying to get my phone repaired through Squaretrade/Allstate, but they've refused service even though I have the sales receipt. They keep insisting that I need a "certificate of ownership". I'm confused about what exactly this means for a smartphone or for other electronics like TVs. Also, I've received emails from Apple about a company called Checkmend. When did these companies become the gold standard over iCloud locks and worldwide blacklists?

It sounds like Squaretrade is being a bit strict with their requirements. Typically, a certificate of ownership can just refer to your original purchase receipt, which proves you bought the device. If they're asking for more, it might be a sign that they're either not authorized by Apple or they're being a bit sketchy about the whole thing.
I’m not sure exactly what you’re referring to, but it seems like they’re trying to verify that you have the right to get your device serviced. If they can't just check the serial number, it might be because they need proof that Find My iPhone is disabled. Some providers ask for that extra step to guard against stolen devices.
