Why Do WebP Animations Lag on iOS?

I'm curious about the lag issues with animated WebP icons on my iPhone 16 Pro Max. I've noticed that Safari, Edge, and Chrome all have the same problem while everything works perfectly on my Android device. Is there a significant difference in how WebKit and Chromium handle WebP animations?

There’s definitely a difference in performance! Safari on iOS is notoriously tricky, and dealing with its quirks can be really frustrating. I recently had a situation where WebGL wasn't working on iOS—even though it was reported as available on the device. So, it's not surprising that animated WebP isn’t running smoothly on iPhones either.

Yeah, it plays, but it’s lagging terribly. It’s awful...

Right? It's just so annoying how inconsistent it is.

I'd actually recommend avoiding WebP for animations altogether. Formats like Rive or video can work a lot better.

Thanks for the suggestion! I’ll give those a try. But I’m also facing issues with some CSS rendering differently than on desktop or Android, which is pretty disappointing.

I feel you! Cross-platform consistency can be such a hassle.

Totally! iOS browsers, thanks to WebKit, struggle a bit with animated WebPs. Even newer iPhones can experience lag, while Android’s Chromium tech handles them a lot better. If you’re having issues, you might want to switch to Lottie or lighter GIFs for now.
