I recently purchased a 256GB flash drive, but when I check it on Windows 11, it only shows up as 233.12GB. I understand the difference between base 10 and binary measurements, which should bring the number closer to 238GB when I do the math. I'm curious if the missing ~5GB is due to flash drive overhead or something else. Anyone have any insights?

Did you make sure to apply PEMDAS correctly when doing your calculations? Just kidding, but the difference between GB and GiB can definitely make these numbers tricky!
To double-check the actual size, right-click on the drive in Windows Explorer and select 'Properties'. Look for the size listed in bytes; that should give you a clearer picture.
You’re in the right ballpark! The capacity can indeed vary based on the formatting type, like NTFS vs exFAT. If your drive is formatted as FAT32, that could be a significant factor in the space loss. Plus, some manufacturers include spare memory in their advertised capacity, meaning it could really just be 250GB. Also, what's the brand? Sometimes cheaper ones can be less efficient.
