I've got an iPhone 12 with 128GB, but it keeps telling me I have less than 5GB of storage left, even after deleting apps to free up space. I can't wrap my head around how my storage usage is adding up to 90GB! I noticed that the system data alone is 11.08GB. Is this normal or is Apple pushing me toward buying more iCloud storage? By the way, will updating to iOS 26 clear up some of this storage issue? I'm currently on iOS 18.

You're not required to buy iCloud storage. There are many ways to back up your data outside of Apple's services. Just evaluate what you truly need.
If your photo library is big, consider investing in cloud storage for backups. It's affordable and gives you some peace of mind about your data.
To clear up some space, try a backup and restore; it could help with the discrepancies in your storage. This isn't just an iCloud issue, it's more about managing your phone's storage.
It sounds like you might be mixing up the storage on your phone and what’s in iCloud. Apple isn’t forcing you to get extra storage, but you might want to check your storage settings. A screenshot could help clarify what's taking up space.
