Why does switching my main monitor in Windows take so long?

I've noticed that when I switch my main display to a different monitor in Windows, it takes a noticeable amount of time before the change happens. I'm curious if this delay might be due to software limitations, hardware performance, or something else entirely. Has anyone experienced this? Is it possible for this process to be instant or near-instant? Also, I'm not sure if this is the same on Linux or MacOS—does anyone have insights on that?

When you change the main monitor, there’s often a brief moment where the screen goes black before the new display shows up. This is because the system is recalibrating the GPU and checking the stability of the display. It's mostly about ensuring everything operates smoothly rather than switching instantly, which could lead to issues in some cases.

So it's really about stability checks? That makes sense. I'm just surprised it takes as long as it does!
