Why Does Wake-on-LAN Stop Working After a Short Time?

I'm having trouble getting Wake-on-LAN (WoL) to work consistently for my gaming PC, which I want to be able to wake up remotely while I'm abroad. The issue I face is that WoL only works if I send the Magic Packet right after the PC goes into Sleep or Shutdown—within 2 to 5 seconds. However, if I wait a bit longer, like 10 to 15 seconds, it just doesn't respond. It feels like my Realtek NIC loses power completely after that short timeframe. Here's what I've got:

- **Hardware:** Realtek PCIe GbE Family Controller, B450 P1.80 motherboard, TIM ISP router.
- **BIOS Settings:** "Resume By PCI-E Device" and "Wake on LAN" are enabled, with "Restore on AC Power Loss" set as well.
- **Windows Device Manager:** Green Ethernet, Energy Efficient Ethernet, and Power Saving Mode are all disabled. I've enabled "Shutdown Wake-On-Lan" and "Wake on Magic Packet," and adjusted link speed settings.
- **Power Management Settings:** Both allowing the device to wake the computer and only allowing magic packets are checked. I tried toggling the option to turn off the device to save power, but that didn't fix it. Fast startup is disabled too.

I'm wondering if there's a hidden setting or registry key to keep my Realtek NIC powered on longer, or if there's a specific driver version that might help? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

It sounds really frustrating! Sometimes these setups can be pretty flaky. I found a workaround by using a smart relay connected to my PC's power button; it allows me to wake the PC more reliably when WoL doesn't work. Might be something to consider if you want a more stable solution!

Check your router settings. Sometimes, routers have energy-saving modes that interfere with WoL functionality. I had that problem once, but I ended up disabling the energy-saving features, and it improved my WoL experience.

My router is left on all the time, though, so I figured that wasn't the issue.
