Why is Microsoft Anti-Malware Service Using So Much RAM?

I need help! My laptop is really struggling because the Microsoft Anti-Malware Service Executable keeps using more than 50% of my memory. I'm currently stuck at home due to the snow and my apartment's shared WiFi is super slow, making it hard to load Microsoft's help pages. Any advice on how to fix this?

I checked for scans and it’s not running one. The memory usage has been high for over an hour now since I logged in. A quick scan didn’t find any threats. Also, the CPU usage is all over the place but generally low, except for the occasional spike to 50%. My memory usually sits around 284MB out of 7.33 GB usable. Any other suggestions?

It sounds like Defender might just be doing a scan, which can cause memory usage to spike. If it’s not scanning and the memory usage is still high, I'd recommend just restarting your laptop to see if that helps.
