Why is my external hard drive giving me a ‘power surge on USB port’ error?

Recently, my external hard drive stopped working for no apparent reason. I was just switching it to another USB port when suddenly I started getting a 'power surge on USB port' message in the bottom right corner of my screen. I'm using Windows 10, and my external hard drive is made by Lenovo. Any idea what might be going on?

It sounds like you might have a damaged USB port. I recommend trying your external hard drive on another computer to see if you get the same error. If it works there, then it's probably an issue with the port itself. If it doesn't work, there might be a problem with the drive instead. Good luck!

I tried another computer too, but it didn't work either, which is weird because the error message didn't show up on the other PC, which runs Windows 7.
