Why is my home WiFi faster than my Ethernet connection?

I've just built a new PC featuring an MSI B840 motherboard, an RTX 5080 GPU, and a 9800X3D processor. I purchased a Cat6e ethernet cable, which works fine, but I'm puzzled because my WiFi connection is much faster than my wired Ethernet connection. I'm on a fiber plan with speeds of 3.0 Gbps.

During speed tests, my WiFi, even through a wall, clocks in around 1.5 Gbps. However, when I switch to the ethernet cable, the maximum speed I can achieve is about 1 Gbps. While the ping did improve from 5 ms to 2 ms with Ethernet, the speed drop is frustrating.

Looking into the network settings, I noticed that my Ethernet connection shows a speed limit of 1.0 Gbps. I attempted to change the speed setting to '2.5 Gbps full duplex' under the advanced configuration, but it never sticks; it keeps defaulting to 1 Gbps. Could that 1.0 Gbps limit be the issue, and why is it correlating with the speed test numbers? I really want to resolve this; any help would be appreciated!

It sounds like your router might only support Gigabit Ethernet, which would explain why you're seeing a max of 1 Gbps on your wired connection. You could check the specifications of your router to confirm. If that's the case, you'd need a router that can handle higher speeds, plus a corresponding network card in your PC that supports more than 1 Gbps.

Make sure to check what speed the port on your router supports where you plugged in your Cat6e cable. That might give you an idea of what's going on. It's also worth noting that while a Cat6 cable can theoretically carry up to 10 Gbps, the real-world limits depend on the whole network setup.

Exactly! The performance can be affected by multiple factors, including the cable, router, and even external interference.

It's possible that you’re dealing with a router provided by your ISP that isn’t built for high speeds. Check if it has any ports labeled for 2.5G, as that could be your only chance for a faster connection. If all ports are Gigabit, you'll need to upgrade to see improvements.

And don't forget to update the drivers for your motherboard and Ethernet adapter! That might help optimize your connection as well.

The speed of your connection is limited by the slowest link in your setup. If your router's Ethernet ports are capped at 1 Gbps, you won't get anything faster, regardless of your cable or PC setup. Ethernet is usually better, but if it’s capped, then WiFi might perform better under certain conditions.
