Why is my laptop using so much RAM with just one tab open?

I've been using my Asus Vivobook S14 Q423SA for a few weeks now, and I'm really puzzled about its high RAM usage. Even when I have just one tab open in Opera GX, it's consuming 11 out of 16GB of RAM. There's nothing running in the background aside from Windows Defender. I don't have malware since I only installed official software like MS Office, Adobe apps, Opera GX, Steam, and Discord—no cracked apps or games out of fear for malware. I've searched for similar issues online but haven't found anything helpful. I really don't know how to begin troubleshooting this.

First off, have you checked Task Manager? It can show you which processes are using the most memory. Sometimes, Windows caches applications that you use frequently, which can explain higher RAM usage. Unused RAM is considered wasted, so it’s normal for Windows to use what it can. And just to clarify, does the RAM usage spike when you open more apps?

I’d recommend posting a screenshot from RAMMap. It gives a detailed breakdown of memory usage and could help illuminate what's going on behind the scenes. It's better to get a clear picture of what’s using your memory.

A friend of mine who also has an Asus Vivobook has had similar problems for ages. Honestly, I couldn't find a permanent solution either. If it’s constantly using 10GB but running slow, that’s definitely a hassle. Sometimes just moving your mouse over a video takes ages for the controls to pop up—it’s frustrating! Have you noticed your usage going up just during typical activities?

Honestly, it’s pretty normal for Windows to use memory that’s available. The idea is to make performance smoother by loading frequently used applications faster. If it’s not affecting your system's speed too much, it might just be how your laptop manages memory.
