Why Is My New 4090 Gaming Rig Underperforming at 4K?

Hey everyone!

Hope you're all doing great! I recently upgraded to a high-end gaming rig and I'm looking for advice on boosting my gaming performance. My setup includes a Rog Strix 4090 GPU, a Ryzen 9 7900X CPU, 32GB of RAM, and a GB x670 Aorus Elite motherboard, all displayed on a 4K ASUS ROG XG27UQ UHD 144Hz monitor.

However, I'm not seeing the expected increase in frames per second compared to my previous configuration, which had a 3080, 5800X, and an x570UD motherboard. For example, in Cyberpunk with everything maxed out, I'm only getting around 60 to 70 fps. Oblivion Remastered gives me 60fps outdoors but sometimes drops below that, and Rust is around 80 to 100fps.

Given this powerful setup, I thought I'd be hitting 100fps or more easily. Could it be the demands of 4K gaming that's holding me back? Should I consider overclocking my components? I'm a bit hesitant to drop down to 1440p as I fear it won't feel the same. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Cheers!

Honestly, all of these new components are already being stressed pretty hard. Overclocking could help slightly, but I doubt it’ll give you the performance boost you're hoping for at 4K. I recommend comparing your setup’s performance with benchmarks on YouTube. You might find that your fps are closer to average than you thought, especially for demanding games.

That's a good point. I looked up some benchmarks, and they showed similar results. It seems like even benchmarks tend to drop when max settings are involved.

It sounds like the 4K resolution is the main culprit here. That’s a lot of pixels for any GPU to handle! You’re right to think about overclocking, but honestly, with the 4090, you probably won’t see much of an uplift at 4K. Focusing on DLSS or even lowering some settings could make a big difference instead.

Exactly! The 4090 can definitely handle 4K, but pushing it to max everywhere is a challenge. Lowering settings might get you closer to that 100fps mark.

You might want to check out some benchmarks for the 4090 paired with your settings at 4K. Just a heads up, those fps numbers seem about right for native 4K at max settings without ray tracing. If you're using ray tracing, expect a significant drop in fps, like 40 or even lower in demanding areas. It’s also worth considering lowering your quality settings or using DLSS to improve performance.

Yeah, the 4090 is great, but running max settings in 4K can be overkill. Switching to medium or high settings could free up some frames without a huge drop in quality.
