Why is my older desktop outperforming my new laptop in gaming?

I have a 2020 desktop with an i7-9700 processor, 16GB of 2667 MHz RAM, and an RTX 2060 Super. My 2023 laptop, an Asus G14, features a Ryzen 9 7940HS, 32GB of 4800 MT/s RAM, and an RTX 4060. While the laptop excels at tasks like encoding and streaming, my desktop clearly handles gaming better at higher settings. The laptop has issues like screen tearing in games like ARC Raiders, and recommended settings suggest dropping everything to 'performance' mode instead of aiming for 'quality'. I've been thinking about potential upgrades for my desktop to extend its lifespan, but I want to understand why it still outperforms the newer laptop in gaming.

Your 2020 desktop likely beats your 2023 laptop in gaming because it has a more powerful RTX 2060 Super and CPU that can utilize more power and cooling. This allows them to maintain higher performance levels without throttling. The laptop's RTX 4060, while newer, may be limited by its power constraints. So, for gaming, your desktop definitely has the upper hand due to better thermal and power management.

I hadn't really thought of it that way. The laptop was a convenience buy, but it just doesn't stack up to my desktop for gaming.
