Why is my PC using so much RAM even when idle?

I'm noticing that my PC is using about 40% of RAM when I'm just sitting idle, and it jumps to around 70% while I'm playing Fortnite. I have a total of 16GB of RAM. Can anyone explain why this is happening? Is it something to be concerned about?

The warm PC might be something to look into, but with RAM usage, as long as you're not struggling during games and your temps are manageable, it's typically fine. Check Task Manager for any rogue apps that could be using extra resources.

Sounds about right to me! Windows itself eats around 5-6GB and apps like Chrome can take up quite a bit too. If you keep a few programs open, it can easily add up to 10-12GB of usage.

Unused RAM is wasted RAM! If you're not having issues while gaming, you might just be hitting standard memory usage levels for your setup.

That's pretty normal behavior. Windows is designed to use your RAM to make everything run faster, and it should free up memory when needed. Unless you're experiencing noticeable lag or performance issues, I wouldn't worry too much about it.

If you're running Windows 10 or 11, 16GB is just the minimum, and many gamers are moving towards 32GB for more efficient operation. Most of your RAM will be taken up by Windows and background apps, so 40% usage isn't concerning.
