Why is my Raspberry Pi 5 experiencing WiFi lag spikes when I connect an NVMe SSD?

I'm having a weird issue with my Raspberry Pi 5. Everything works smoothly until I plug in my Samsung 990 EVO Plus NVMe SSD. When it's connected, the WiFi ping times go all over the place. Without the NVMe, I get a steady 3-4ms ping to my router, but with it, pings can jump randomly from 3ms to as high as 700ms! I've tried a bunch of things to fix this, including checking different SD cards, reinstalling the OS, and even disabling WiFi power management. I've ruled out any issues with Ethernet as it runs perfectly even with the NVMe attached. My WiFi signal is excellent, and there's no noticeable correlation with CPU load or disk activity. I'm starting to think this might be an EMI issue. Has anyone else faced this with their setup? Any tips on shielding or solving this problem?

One thing you could try is wrapping the NVMe SSD in tin foil and electrical tape to see if that helps with the EMI. Just make sure you don't accidentally short anything out, and grounding the foil might provide extra help!

Great idea! I’ll be careful while doing that. The case I have has a metal top and bottom, so I can definitely ground it. I’ll keep everyone posted on what happens.
