Why is my SATA SSD showing low download speeds on Steam?

I've been experiencing frustratingly slow download speeds on my SATA SSD while using Steam. My current speeds average around 50 Mbps, hitting a maximum of about 115 Mbps, which seems pretty low given that I still have 800GB free on my 2TB SSD. I've set the Steam process to high priority and made sure my download region is set to my local area. According to CrystalDiskInfo, the SSD is in good health, so I'm unsure about the issue. My CPU is an R5 5600G, and I seem to remember it being faster when I first got the SSD. Could there be a problem with the hardware, or is there something else I should check? For reference, my full specs are: Windows 11, 16GB RAM, R5 5600G, RX 5600 XT, 2TB SATA SSD, and a 1TB HDD.

Did you run a speed test on your SSD itself? If you're seeing around 544 MB/s read in a CrystalDiskMark test, then the drive seems to be functioning well. Just note that if you’re comparing bits to bytes, there’s a significant difference—network speeds are in Mbps, while drive speeds are typically recorded in MBps. Don’t confuse the two!

There might be a few things going on here. First, remember that 50 Mbps is basically corresponding to internet speed, not directly your SSD's ability to download data. If you're hitting those speeds, it could be more about your internet connection than the SSD itself. Just to clarify, SATA SSDs can handle much more than that, typically up to 600 Mbps, so if everything else checks out, you might want to look into your network. Also, have you confirmed the SSD is configured correctly in the BIOS? Sometimes, making sure the SATA mode is set to AHCI can help with performance.

Also, keep in mind that download speeds on Steam can fluctuate due to a number of reasons, including server load, ISP throttling, or even router issues. Sometimes simpler tweaks like resetting your router or testing a different download region on Steam can yield better results.
