Why is My Son’s PC Lagging While Playing Fortnite?

Hey everyone! I'm not the most tech-savvy person, but I'm hoping someone can help me out here. My son has a gaming PC that we picked up a few years back, and he's been playing Fortnite on it. Lately, it's been lagging a lot and taking ages to load. I mean, I know it's a budget build, but it used to run fine! Here are the specs I can remember: an AMD Radeon 580 GPU, Intel i7-4770 CPU at 3.40GHz, 16 GB of RAM, and it's running Windows 10 Pro. Thanks for any insights you can offer!

Given that the components are around 10 years old and Fortnite uses Unreal Engine 5, it might not meet the minimum requirements for smooth gameplay. You might need to consider upgrading the GPU to run it better, especially for 1080p.

Thanks! How can I determine if I need a GPU upgrade or if the CPU is the bottleneck too?

You might want to lower the graphics settings in the game to see if that helps with the lag. Also, installing a program like Fraps could help you monitor the FPS. If it's below 60 or fluctuating, that could definitely cause the stuttering.

Since you have an AMD GPU, you can check the AMD software for built-in FPS stats, which might be more convenient than using Fraps.

It sounds like the hardware might be getting a bit dated for newer games. Also, have you checked whether the game is installed on an SSD or an HDD? Slow load times often point to hard drive issues.

Hi! Thanks for the response. It’s on an SSD.
