Why is my wireless keyboard acting up when I connect my external hard drive?

I need some help! I'm not exactly a tech whiz, but I recently had a local IT shop build me a decent gaming and business tower computer. It works well for most things, especially since it's water-cooled. However, I'm facing a weird issue: when I plug in my 1TB external hard drive, which is filled with high-res photos, my wireless keyboard goes haywire. It stalls and drops text, making it super frustrating. I live pretty far from any tech shops, so I'm looking for potential causes and solutions, not suggestions to return it. Any ideas?

The distance between your keyboard and its receiver can impact performance. If there's interference, it can lead to problems. Consider getting a USB extension cable to move the receiver closer. Also, be aware that larger external drives can sometimes need more power than what USB can provide, especially if they're trying to load many high-res images at once.

Thanks! I resolved this by moving the keyboard receiver to a side panel port.

This could be due to bandwidth sharing; your keyboard and hard drive might be competing for resources. If possible, try using a powered USB hub, which can help balance the power supply.

Check if you're using the best ports! It seems like your keyboard might be connected via USB 2.0, which could be sharing bandwidth with the external HDD. Make sure the keyboard's receiver is in a USB 2.0 port and the hard drive in a USB 3.0 port, if possible.

Try using a USB port on the back of your computer for the hard drive. That might stop your keyboard from acting up. I had the same issue, and it worked for me!

It sounds like there might be interference from your USB 3.0 ports. When you connect the hard drive, it might be interfering with your wireless keyboard. Try using a rear USB port for the drive or a short extension cable to get it further from the keyboard's receiver.
