Why is my Zorin OS 18 running slow compared to Windows 10?

I've just started using Zorin OS 18 and I'm experiencing a significant slowdown on my computer. For example, when I'm watching a YouTube video while playing a game, the video stutters and the game lags. This never happened when I was using Windows 10. I haven't changed any hardware since switching to Zorin OS. Is there a driver I might need to update or a setting I can adjust to improve performance? Here are my hardware details: 16 GB RAM, Intel Core i5 750, and an Nvidia GPU.

Zorin can be a bit resource-heavy, especially if you're coming from a more lightweight environment. Given your CPU's performance scores, it might struggle a bit with Zorin's more demanding interface. If you want to stick with a similar layout but need something lighter, you could try Zorin Lite or even other lightweight distributions like AnduinOS.

Just so you know, the amount of storage you have (490.1 GB) can also make a difference. If it’s a traditional hard drive, that might slow things down compared to using an SSD. If you’re open to exploring, BigLinux might also be a good alternative to Zorin—it’s got a ton of preinstalled features too.

Have you thought about reinstalling Zorin OS? Sometimes a faulty install can cause these kinds of problems. Before you make any final judgments on performance, ensure your system is fully up to date. It might also help to clarify what specific performance issues you're facing. Is navigating slow overall, or just in certain applications?

If these performance hiccups are mainly on Zorin and not on other Debian-based systems, you might want to ask in Zorin-specific forums for targeted advice. Performance issues can vary widely between different distros, so you might get better help from a community that focuses just on Zorin.

It sounds like you might be running into issues with an older Nvidia card, specifically if it's a Fermi model. Newer drivers may not support it well anymore. The default open-source ‘nouveau’ drivers are decent but can lag behind proprietary ones in terms of performance. It might be worth checking if your GPU is optimized for Zorin OS, as some video decoding might not work properly with nouveau. You may need to adjust settings or consider an alternative driver if it’s available.
