Why is so much RAM being used when I have nothing open?

I've been having some performance issues with my PC since I got it. Previously, I could run games at 120fps, but now I'm struggling to hit 40fps. I've noticed in Task Manager that out of my 16GB of RAM, about 10.5GB is being used even when I have no applications open. What can I do to reduce this memory usage and improve my PC's performance?

You might want to start by checking your startup apps. Some programs load automatically and stick around, which can add up to a lot of memory usage without you even realizing it. Also, Windows tends to use RAM aggressively for caching and background activities, which makes it look like it’s always using a lot of memory even when idle. If you’ve got a bunch of browser tabs or apps like Discord open, those can really pile up the RAM usage too.

I had no idea browsers were such RAM hogs! Thanks for the heads up.

It sounds like you've got some background processes eating up your RAM. 16GB is on the lower side these days, so be sure to close any unnecessary applications, especially those browser tabs. Check your Task Manager to see what’s using the most memory; modern browsers can be surprisingly heavy on resources.
