I'm using a Windows 11 desktop and need to access data from a friend's hard drive, but it isn't appearing in Windows Explorer. The drive does show up in Disk Management, but the option to assign a drive letter is greyed out. I also tried updating drivers using the wizard in Disk Management, and it says everything is up to date. The hard drive is a Lacie 1 terabyte. Any advice on how to troubleshoot this would be greatly appreciated!

From what you've said, it seems likely that the drive is not formatted with NTFS, which is standard for Windows. If that's the case, it may require reformatting or other software to access the files. Just be sure to back up any important data first before making any changes!
You might want to check what format the disk is using. If it's formatted with a file system that Windows doesn't recognize, like ext4 or APFS, it won't show up correctly. You could try finding out what OS was used with this drive before and if it had any special settings. Just a heads up, making changes to your BIOS or disk setup could potentially lead to data loss, so be careful!
If it turns out to be ext4, you can access it using Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL). Just a thought!

That makes sense! I'm waiting to hear back from the owner about the format, but I thought it might be something simple to fix.
