I'm having a bit of trouble here. I'm trying to access my laptop's hard drive using a USB to USB cable, but my PC isn't recognizing it. I also tried a USB to Type-C cable, which I know works for transferring files since it detects my phone without issues. I've read that I might need a USB Bridge Cable and a special app for this, but I'd prefer to avoid that if possible. Just a bit of background: I reset my laptop for a competition, and in the process, I lost some app data from a game I was playing, which I would really like to recover. Is it even possible to retrieve that data without the proper cables, or should I just give up? Any help would be appreciated, and please be kind!

You definitely can't do PC-to-PC transfers with just a regular USB cable. USB needs one end to be a host (like your computer) and the other to be a device (like a phone or an HDD). Your best bet is to take the hard drive out and use the right adapter for data recovery. A typical USB cable won't work for this type of connection!
It sounds like you're on the right track! USB connections are designed for a host-device architecture, which means you can't just connect two computers directly via a standard USB cable. For data recovery, you'll need to physically remove the hard drive from your laptop and connect it to your PC using a compatible SATA or NVMe adapter or enclosure. That's the best way to access your files directly.
Got it! I’ll look into getting that adapter.
Just to add on, when you're messing with USB connections, always remember that both devices can't be hosts at the same time. If possible, you could also use a thumb drive to transfer the necessary files if you know what you're looking for; that's often much easier!
I hadn't thought about that! I’ll check what files I need and see if I can do that.

Thanks for clarifying that! I was a bit confused about the direct connection thing.
