Why Won’t My DVD Player Read Certain Files on My Rewritable DVD?

I'm having some trouble with my DVD player. I was trying to burn a video onto a rewritable DVD, and while the disc shows up on my computer, my DVD player isn't recognizing it. The DVD (a DVD+R) had a few .avi videos that play just fine on the player, but the new .avi and .mpeg-2 files I just burned aren't showing up at all. I used Windows File Explorer to burn the files, so I'm wondering if that might be the problem? Does anyone have suggestions for programs that could help me with this?

Not all standalone players handle data discs too well, even if they used to support MPEG-2 files. So, what's the model of your DVD player? Also, for a disc to be playable on most devices, you usually need to use dedicated authoring software. Just burning data files won't cut it. Check out software specifically for DVD authoring if you're looking for broader compatibility!

My DVD player is a Philips DVP5960, and it plays .avi files from the same disc. I'm guessing the author's right about needing authoring software—do you have any suggestions for free programs?
