Will a PCIe Gen 5 GPU Work in a Gen 4 Slot?

Hey everyone! I'm looking into buying an RTX 5060TI with 16GB of memory, but I noticed it's listed as PCIe Gen 5.0. My motherboard only has a PCIe Gen 4.0 slot. Will this GPU still function properly with my setup? If so, will I see a significant drop in performance? I hope this question isn't too silly. Thanks for your help!

Yep, it will work great! PCIe devices are all backwards compatible, so your PCIe 5.0 GPU will operate at PCIe 4.0 speeds without any major performance issues. And just as a heads up, the 5060 Ti uses 8 lanes, so that might be something to consider too.

Yes, it should work just fine! Just make sure to set your main PCIe slot to 4.0 in the BIOS instead of leaving it on Auto. While there may be a tiny performance loss—probably around 1% or less—it’s really not something to worry about. Just remember to get the 16 GB version, as the 8 GB version has been shown to experience noticeable performance issues on PCIe 4.0.

Got it! I can change that in the BIOS, right? Also, love your username!

You're all good! As long as you’re using a Gen 4 x16 slot, there shouldn't be any major issues with performance loss when using a Gen 5 GPU. In fact, even if you were on a Gen 3 x16 or Gen 4 x8 slot, the performance impact would likely only range from 1% to 4%, and that’s for more demanding GPUs. For the 5060 ti, the difference will probably be even smaller.

So it's confirmed that it's x16, right?
