I'm trying to decide if it's worth the trip to the nearest Apple Store, which is over an hour away. My phone was stolen, and when the thief realized they couldn't access it, they threw it out the window. I found it on the road, and while my case protected it somewhat, the back is pretty smashed, and the battery is massively swollen. I reached out to Apple Support, but they just keep recommending a store visit. My Apple Care expired two months ago, and I think I'll have to pay around $99 for the battery and $160 for the back. Do you think the Apple Store will help me with this, or will they just suggest getting a new phone?

Honestly, we can’t say for sure without seeing the phone. Your best bet is to bring it in and let them check it out.
The cost can vary depending on the model. You didn't mention which phone you have, but your estimate of $99 plus $159 sounds about right for a battery and back repair, assuming that's all that’s wrong. Just be careful—if the battery is swelling a lot, there might be other issues that could push the cost up, possibly leading to a full replacement, which might not be worth it if your phone is older.
Swollen batteries can definitely be replaced by Apple service, just like any other battery. If the back glass also needs fixing, that shouldn't be a problem either.
Right, but keep in mind there might be more damage. If the frame is bent, they could end up recommending a full phone replacement instead.
Honestly, the best option is to take it to the store or a certified repair place like Best Buy. They’ll give you a clearer idea of what's possible.

Thanks for the info! It's an iPhone 15. Apple did say that the damaged battery prevents mail-in service.
