My wife recently set up a new Apple ID with a different email but kept the same phone number she uses for her main Apple ID, mainly to manage a second account for a mobile game. She's worried that by doing this, she might lose her original account along with her 3500+ photos stored on iCloud. Currently, all her photos are still available on both her phone and laptop, and she's trying to back them up to an external hard drive, but it's taking a long time since it only transfers 100 photos at a time. Should she be concerned about her iCloud photos being deleted?

As a precaution, it’s a good idea to get a 32GB USB drive or another external hard drive for her important files. Better to be safe than sorry, especially with so many memories at stake!
If you have Amazon Prime, definitely check out the Amazon Photos app for a quick backup solution! Google Photos and Dropbox also work great for backing up pictures if you want more options.
From what I understand, if her new Apple ID is just an email and she's not using the phone number to log in, her photos should be safe. I have two Apple IDs linked to the same phone number and my photos are still intact!
I've had two Apple accounts for years now without any problems. As long as she uses a different email for each, everything should be fine. The photos will still be attached to her original Apple ID, so no worries!
She might want to double-check the source of that info, as it's misleading. You can use one phone number with multiple Apple accounts without issues. Just make sure she's logged into the correct email for her original account to access her pictures.
