Hey everyone! I've been interviewing for entry-level software and data engineering roles and recently received a rejection from Sonos. They mentioned that my experience was impressive, but they are looking for candidates whose backgrounds better match their current needs for a Junior Data Engineer position. I suspect the main issue is that my background doesn't align with their tech stack.
I graduated last June with a First Class Honours in Computing Science from the University of Glasgow. My projects include machine learning and big data work, and I've built a CRM platform using React.js and ASP.NET Core in an Agile environment. I also hold an IBM Data Science certification from Coursera and have skills in Python, Java, JavaScript, C#, and more.
Now, I'm thinking about how to enhance my profile, specifically considering an Azure certification like AZ-204 to showcase my cloud skills. For those of you in software or data engineering roles, do you think the AZ-204 certification would help my CV stand out during the initial screening? Would it significantly increase my chances at companies like Sonos, or is it just a nice extra at the junior level? Are there other certifications or areas I should focus on instead? I want to demonstrate my real-world software engineering skills beyond my degree and projects. Thanks for any advice!

It's important to note that the automated rejection email isn’t a reflection of your potential. Often, it's just a blanket response. While a good LinkedIn presence can help, it's more of a tiebreaker during interviews than a game changer for initial screenings. As for the AZ-204—getting certified can definitely help you demonstrate that 'immediate value' companies are looking for in junior candidates, especially if you can’t match their tech stack perfectly.
Exactly! It could give you that edge and help open up more opportunities.
You're definitely on the right path! From my hiring experience, a strong LinkedIn profile is crucial. It often carries more weight than GitHub or other platforms because we tend to look there first. Plus, Microsoft certifications, like the AZ-204, really stand out. They show that you’re proactive and have relevant skills in the Azure ecosystem. Keep building your skills and don’t underestimate the value of engaging on LinkedIn. It can really open doors for you!
I totally agree! Consider sharing your side projects or contributions on LinkedIn. Showing you’re active in the community makes you stand out. Take the initiative; it’s all about being part of that small group that creates content.
Thanks for the tips! I've realized that I need to focus more on my LinkedIn presence and actively share my progress. I appreciate your encouragement!
That makes sense! I think earning the certification could really help me prove my value and differentiate me from other candidates who are applying.
