Will installing Linux on a USB stick affect my data on a separate partition?

I have a USB stick that I formatted to create two separate partitions: one is about 8GB for the Linux installation, and the other is for my personal data. I'm wondering if it's safe to install Linux on the 8GB partition without risking the data on the other partition. Is this a good approach? Also, what program should I use for the installation? I've heard of Etcher and Ventoy, but I'm not sure which one would work best. As a Windows user, this is my first time doing this.

I get what you mean! If you're actually installing Linux onto that USB stick, just be ready for it to be a slow experience. It's like trying to navigate a mall with only a catalog—frustrating and probably disappointing!

Exactly! I just want to make sure I don’t screw anything up. Thanks for confirming!

It can definitely work, but it’s generally easier to use a separate USB drive. Since USB drives can be small and your data is precious, I’d recommend getting another stick just for Linux. That way, you won't have any risk of losing your personal files!

If you're just writing an installation ISO to the USB, it will wipe the entire drive, including both partitions. However, if you're going to install Linux from another USB drive onto that 8GB partition, it could work, but you'll likely face some issues since 8GB is quite small for a full installation. Be mindful of that!
