Will My Current PSU Handle an Upgrade to a New CPU?

I'm thinking about upgrading my PC setup. Right now, I've got an Intel 9700K and an RTX 5070, with three fans in my case and no AIO cooler. I'm considering swapping in a 12900K since I found a great deal on it, and I can keep my existing DDR4 RAM and other parts. I mainly use my computer for web browsing, CS2, and Flight Simulator, and my current setup has performed well. I have a 650W Seasonic PSU (FOCUS Plus 650 Gold SSR-650FX) but I'm unsure if it can handle the power demands of the new CPU, especially since I'm planning to buy a new case soon. I'm curious if I need to replace my PSU now before I start the upgrade, as I know the new chip will draw more power. Any insights would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Seasonic's 650W PSUs are solid, but I think it's better to err on the safe side and aim for at least a 750W unit, especially if you're planning to upgrade. I used to run an 850W on a similar setup, and I feel much safer now with a 1000W.

Do you know the exact model of your PSU? Also, how long have you had it? If it's been running since 2019, that might make it worth considering an upgrade too. Better to be safe!

Unless your PSU has been acting up, I think you’ll be fine. If you live somewhere where power outages or surges are common, though, that could be a concern. Just keep an eye on it after the upgrade; if you notice any instability, that’s probably a sign you should replace it.

You can plug your build into pcpartpicker.com to estimate total wattage. If your PSU is older than seven years or out of warranty, I would suggest replacing it just to be safe.

I'd recommend getting a new PSU. The 12900K and RTX 5070 together will likely pull around 550W or more just for those two components. SeaSonic makes quality PSUs, but it's better not to push it. Thankfully, there are some great deals on 850W units right now, so it's a good time to upgrade. Just make sure you keep your CPU cool—a lot of power and heat come with that generation!
