I'm about to get an RTX 5070, and I've heard some troubling stories about the 12-pin power cables melting. Is this something I should worry about with my new GPU?

The melting issue is mostly a concern with older cards that push around 600W. The RTX 5070 doesn't come close to that level of power draw, so it should be safe to use.
As long as you plug the wire in correctly, the chances of any melting are pretty low. The RTX 5070 is a power-efficient card, so you shouldn't run into problems unless you're dealing with extreme overclocking, and even then, that's more likely with the RTX 5080 or 5090 models.
Just a heads up, the 12-pin cable is primarily for the 3000 series cards. The 5000 series, including the RTX 5070, actually uses a 16-pin connector. There are no documented cases of the 12-pin cables melting with the 3000 series. Just make sure you understand the difference!
