Will Upgrading to an i7-7700k Help My Gaming Performance with an RTX 4060?

I'm currently using an i5-7500 paired with a RTX 4060, but my CPU seems to bottleneck quite a bit. It's running at about 70-80% usage on the lowest settings in AC Rally, which gives me around 60 FPS, while the GPU is only at 40-50% usage. However, when there are many spectators in-game, my CPU maxes out at 100%, causing my PC to reboot. I've experimented with different resolutions and settings, and while it runs at 2560x1440 on low, the frame rate drops significantly and the visuals are quite ghosty. On 3840x2160, the game won't run at all, and playing on the lowest settings makes the graphics look horrible. I've updated drivers and cleared cache, but I'm wondering if upgrading to an i7-7700k would make any difference. What do you think?

Consider going for an i5-12400F with a B660 DDR4 motherboard. You can likely reuse your existing DDR4 RAM, which saves costs. This CPU would pair well with your RTX 4060 and eliminate those 100% CPU spikes. Also, you can sell your i5-7500 and motherboard for about $40-$60, and use that to offset your new build costs.

Honestly, your RTX 4060 is struggling with that i5-7500. I’d recommend looking for a newer gen CPU, like the Ryzen 5600x or 5500, or something from Intel's 12th generation. You'd really notice a difference without breaking the bank.

You’re really pushing that 4060 hard with your setup. If you do decide to upgrade, consider not just the CPU but also the motherboard and RAM, especially to future-proof your gaming rig.

A used i7-7700k goes for about $90-$100 on eBay, but you might want to consider a Ryzen 5500 and an AM4 board instead. For around $120, you could get a much better CPU performance while keeping your current hardware.

Okay, nice, thanks!

The upgrade to an i7-7700k might give you a slight boost but really, it's not worth it unless you can get it for next to nothing. The performance gains would be minimal because the architecture is just getting old.

Thanks, that helps me make a decision!
