Hey everyone! I've recently switched to Linux and I'm trying to get YouTube to work smoothly on Firefox. Here's the situation:
1. When I watch any YouTube video above 720p, it stutters and isn't smooth at all.
2. If I try to watch YouTube videos at 1x speed or higher while in 60fps, it stutters too.
3. I tested the same videos on the Brave browser and they play perfectly fine, which is a bit frustrating since I'm not really a fan of Brave and prefer Firefox for its customization.
Here are my laptop specs: it's a dual boot system with a separate 500GB SSD for each OS, powered by an i5 13th gen HX series processor paired with an RTX 4090 on a Lenovo LOQ laptop.
I've tried several solutions including:
- Clearing cookies and cache
- Ensuring I have the latest version of Firefox
- Enabling hardware acceleration (which only made things worse)
- Turning off all extensions to troubleshoot
- Using an Agent Switcher (but that didn't help either)
Do you think this is a problem that can be fixed, or should I just stick to Brave for YouTube? I'd appreciate any help! Thanks for reading!

Have you thought about trying a different browser? I've noticed Firefox can have its quirks, especially with video playback. It might be worth it to check out Chrome or something else just to see if that resolves the stuttering for you.
You might want to check out FreeTube, it’s an alternative YouTube app that doesn’t have those playback issues. You can download it from their website if you're interested! Just a thought to help with your YouTube viewing experience.
What driver are you using for your NVIDIA graphics? I had similar video problems on Firefox, and switching to the proprietary driver while forcing full composition pipeline in the NVIDIA X Server settings really helped solve those issues. Give that a go and let me know if it works for you!
Yeah, I’ve tried Chrome and Brave, and those work fine. The stuttering happens mainly in Firefox.
