Hey everyone! I just started using AWS yesterday and I'm setting up an AWS Organization. I managed to create one member account, but when I tried to add another, I hit a wall with an error saying, "You have exceeded the allowed number of AWS accounts." I checked the quota for the maximum number of accounts, which is supposed to be 10. I've already created a support case with AWS, but I'm curious if anyone else has faced this issue or if it's something specific to new free tier accounts. Appreciate any insights! Thanks in advance!

I've experienced this too! I contacted support, but they couldn't help at first and closed my case. After a bit of waiting, I played around with other services and later on was able to create the accounts I needed for my control tower sandbox. Be aware that the docs mention the quota might actually be lower than what's displayed. Check the note under the AWS Organizations Account Quotas; it says new accounts might have a limit below the default of 10.
You've done the right thing by reaching out for support! The default limit is indeed set to 10 accounts, but they'll usually need to check your request. You can find more about how to request an increase in this AWS doc: https://go.aws/4kZOMIb. Just hang tight until they get back to you!
Thanks!
Quick question: did you sign up after July 15? Also, make sure you check the "Applied account-level quota value" instead of the default limit column—it's likely misleading. For accounts created after July 15, the applied limit could be as low as 1, so watch out for that limitation if you’re trying to create multiple free tier accounts.
If you're having this issue, try launching an EC2 instance in a couple of regions, like us-east-1 and eu-west-1, for about twenty minutes each, then wait half an hour before trying to add more accounts. We often do this to 'unlock' the quotas, so give that a shot!

Thanks for sharing that!
