My HP Omen is Stuck on ‘Preparing Automatic Repair’—What Should I Do?

I woke up to find my HP Omen 17 laptop displaying the message 'Preparing Automatic Repair' along with just the HP Omen logo. My laptop is about 6 or 7 years old and runs Windows 10, powered by an Intel i7 (not sure if it's the 7700HQ or 8750H) and a GTX 1070. I upgraded the RAM to 32GB of DDR4 a few years back. I'm not sure if the automatic repair started during the night or if I triggered it when I tried to use my laptop half an hour ago. It's hooked up to a main monitor for display since I keep the laptop in a cabinet in my RV for space. The monitor wasn't turning on, so I opened the cabinet and found it on the repair screen. I've read it can take hours to complete. How can I find out what caused it once it finishes? And if it doesn't finish, how do I recover my data? I also noticed my laptop doesn't have that spinning circle that indicates it's working—should it have that, or is it just my model not showing it?

It sounds like your laptop entered Automatic Repair because it couldn't boot properly, which can happen sometimes. If you have access to another computer, consider creating a recovery USB to help repair your Windows installation. Otherwise, you might just need to let it run for a while and see if it progresses. Patience is key, as it can take some time!

I don't have another PC to use for that, and I didn’t force it to reboot. I typically just sleep it at night. Could it still have encountered an issue?
