Questions About Portable WiFi Routers for Travel

Hey there! I'm currently in Chile and considering investing in a portable WiFi router since I need something other than relying on mobile data. I'm not looking for technical jargon, just want something that works! I'd mainly connect one device now, but having the option for more in the future would be great. I want to use it primarily while traveling. So, do all portable WiFi routers need a SIM card to function without existing WiFi? And for those that don't need a SIM, do they only work with existing WiFi instead of providing a private internet connection on the go? If there's any other info I should know or questions I missed, let me know! Thanks!

Yes, most portable WiFi routers do require a SIM card to operate without WiFi. Without it, they can't connect to a mobile network. Essentially, that’s how they create their internet connection – they pull from cellular data, just like a mobile phone would.

That's why I'm asking you all lol. I am not familiar with this kind of technology 🙂

Sounds like you’re looking for a WiFi Hotspot! These small devices connect to a mobile network and require a SIM card and a data plan. If you’re after a portable option that doesn’t need a SIM, you would be looking at things like travel routers, but they typically need WiFi or ethernet to work. Just to clarify, what exactly are you hoping to do with it?

Thank you for your response! I see now. I was looking for a Wi-Fi Hotspot but wasn't aware that is what it's called. The travel router wouldn’t help me much since I'm using a lended phone right now. I’m just trying to figure out how to travel and use my iPad without a phone. Are there other options besides a Wi-Fi Hotspot or travel router that don’t need a SIM or existing WiFi source?
