Is it worth paying more for a higher-end motherboard?

I'm trying to decide between two motherboards for my gaming PC: the Asus B850 Plus Gaming WiFi for around 1800SEK (about $180) and the MSI B850 Tomahawk Max WiFi for about 3000SEK (around $300). My PC will mainly be used for gaming and has a PNY 5080 with a 9800x3D. Is the additional cost of the MSI worth it?

If you're planning on overclocking, a pricier motherboard might offer better cooling for voltage regulators. But if overclocking isn't on your agenda, it’s probably not necessary.

The differences between these two motherboards are pretty slight. They probably have the same chipset and similar-quality VRMs. Choosing the cheaper one might be the smarter option, especially since the main reasons for spending more would typically be for enhanced chipset features and better VRMs, which are becoming less crucial these days.

When comparing specs, look for any additional features that might catch your eye. I usually lean towards higher-end boards for things like faster networking or extra ports, but if you’re primarily gaming, you probably won’t see a big change in FPS just from the motherboard alone.

I’m just weighing whether those extra ports are actually worth it for gaming.

The performance difference between those two motherboards is minimal, honestly. If the cheaper board can connect all your devices without issue, there’s really no need to splurge on the more expensive one. Just make sure it has all the ports you actually need!

Thanks for the insight! I’ve heard similar things about MSI’s drivers being buggy too.

Generally, there's not much difference in reliability among motherboards above the lowest tier. If you consider the higher-end models, they might last longer, but most will be out of date before they wear out. You often end up paying for features you don't need.

Almost never worth it to pay extra unless you need those specific features of a higher-end board. If you’re not going to use the extra functionalities, don’t feel pressured to pay more. In stock settings, the performance across the board doesn't vary much.

If you’re thinking about the Asus B850 Plus Gaming and MSI B850 Tomahawk Max, I’d personally go with MSI if they were the same price. But since they aren't, you might as well save your money. For gaming, there’s really no substantial difference between these two, so consider opting for a non-WiFi model to save even more.

No worries, I mainly use it for gaming without needing extra tools!

The main advantages of a pricier board are usually better connectivity and VRMs. If you’re not overclocking heavily, the higher-end features may not matter much. And honestly, most boards from the mid-range and up won’t give you a problem as long as you're not getting a bottom-of-the-barrel option. Just be cautious with Asus, their customer support isn’t the best.

Gotcha! I'll keep that in mind. Thanks!
