I'm looking to extend the life of my laptop, which I primarily use for photo editing with GIMP and Darktable. I've had enough of Adobe's subscription model. I want to switch to Linux but I'm not very tech-savvy. Will I need to back up my files to an external drive, or can I keep everything intact during the switch? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

You can even use AI to help guide you through the installation process! I found it super handy when setting up Fedora KDE + Plasma.
Just pick a distro, create a live USB, and see how you like it first. If it feels good, back up your files and then go ahead with the installation. I've been testing it this way for a couple of weeks, and it's been a rich learning experience with only a few snags to sort out once I get my hands on a proper installation.
It's actually easier than you might think! I'd still suggest doing a backup just in case. You could also try dual booting first, which allows you to use both Windows and Linux. If you decide to fully commit to Linux and wipe Windows, just remember to back everything up since all the data will be lost. That way, if you want to go back, you'll be prepared! You can check out my website for a step-by-step guide on the process.
Always back up your files first. After that, switching to Linux can actually be quite straightforward. Just take your time picking the distro you like best!
Yes, please back up your files! Since you're switching from Windows to Linux, the file systems are really different, so everything on the drive will be wiped. Even if you're switching between different Linux systems, a backup is always a good idea. If you want to be super cautious, consider replacing your drive and keeping your old one with Windows intact until you're sure about the switch.
You'll definitely want to back up your files! When switching to Linux, you'll need to wipe your drive clean for a proper installation. A good starting point is Linux Mint, which makes things simpler. The software you're already using works on Linux, so you should be fine once you're set up!
Great, thank you!
Just a heads up: since you're installing a totally different OS, your files won't carry over automatically. You really should have a backup plan in place. And don't forget to create a USB drive for reinstalling Windows before you dive into Linux!

Check out Zorin! I set it up for my sister, and she loves using GIMP and Darktable on it. It's pretty user-friendly, which is perfect for non-techies.
