Every time my partner's cousin visits, it's like our WiFi just dies. A few weeks ago, while we were streaming a movie, she asked for the WiFi password. As soon as she connected her iPhone, the movie started buffering. I told her to turn off the WiFi on her phone and it went back to normal. Just yesterday, while I was gaming, I noticed major lag spikes, and again, she was on the couch. I had her turn off her WiFi, and everything went back to normal. I'm planning to change the WiFi password so she can't connect automatically, but I'm curious to know what might be causing these issues on her iPhone. Any advice?

Generally, a phone shouldn’t disrupt the network unless it’s downloading large files. What’s your total connected device count? Also, I’d suggest using Ethernet for gaming—way more stable.
There’s a quick fix if she's the only one having issues. On her iPhone, go to Settings > Wi-Fi, tap the info (i) button next to your network, and turn off the Private Wi-Fi Address feature. Then have her reconnect. This can sometimes help with connectivity problems.
I heard that iPhones use a random MAC address for privacy—but could that really mess with my router's settings?
Honestly, it might not even be her phone causing issues—your WiFi might just not handle multiple connections well. Have you tried connecting other people's devices to see if you get the same problem?
We’ve had plenty of guests connect without any issues before. Even with gaming PCs and TVs on Ethernet, I was gaming and she just walked in, connected automatically, and boom—lag. My question is really focused on if something could be wrong with her phone that’s causing this.
I bet as soon as her iPhone connects, it's busy uploading or downloading a ton of data, especially since iPhones often do background updates when they join a network. Check your router settings to see if there are any unusual spikes in usage when she's around.
But why specifically an iPhone? That seems odd!
It sounds like her phone might have some malware or maybe she's downloading a lot of files, like torrents. It can also be due to a bunch of apps running in the background. I suggest a system reset on her device; that should eliminate any problems. Just make sure she pays attention to what she installs afterward, as some apps can be real troublemakers—I've seen one mine Bitcoin in the background!
Great point! I'd also recommend you run a speed test to see what your actual internet performance is like.
I had a similar problem when my partner upgraded to a new iPhone. I ended up creating a separate network for 5GHz devices, which resolved the issue. Might be worth trying that approach!

It's all on Ethernet already! Just to be clear, my partner watches movies and I’ve been gaming at the same time without any major problems before; her phone connecting just seemed to mess things up.
