The crucial thing to remember is Googlebot has a render budget. It runs your JavaScript, but if the API takes longer than a couple seconds, it gives up and indexes whatever is loaded at that point.
Full SSR isn’t your only solution. If data consistency is an issue, consider using Incremental Static Regeneration (ISR) with Next.js. It allows you to deliver static HTML for immediate indexing while still refreshing data in the background.
To handle the above-the-fold content, React Server Components could work perfectly. They render the initial visible portions on the server, so users get a fast load, and Google sees populated HTML. If switching frameworks isn't ideal, look into services like Prerender.io; they can intercept crawler requests and provide fully-rendered HTML, though it adds complexity and cost.
